"... how can I tell you what you are asking me about the way my crucifixion took place? My God, what a confusion and what a humiliation I feel when I have to manifest what You have done in this petty creature of yours!"

Thus begins the letter addressed to Father Benedetto that Francesco Forgione, better known as Padre Pio, wrote on October 22, 1918. On the morning of September 20, just over a month before, the friar of Pietralcina had been the protagonist of one of the most important episodes, both incredible and controversial, of Catholic spirituality. As usual, he had just celebrated Holy Mass when, in a state of drowsiness, he received a visit from a "strange person" with hands, feet and ribs dripping with blood. Dragging himself with difficulty into his cell, Padre Pio fell asleep and upon waking, he was seized by strong pain of the wounds, which accompanied him until September 23, 1968, the day of his death.

Even after such a long time, the memory of the sufferings of Padre Pio on that morning of September 20, 1918 does not fade; on the contrary, it continues to be considered, by the mystical theologians and by many faithful, as a clear sign of edification by the Holy Spirit. The wounds of Padre Pio would be the same as those of Jesus Christ: just as the Son of God, the priest of Pietralcina also suffered the crucifixion for the sake of his people.
